During my recent visit to Sunrise Sanitation Service, I also had the opportunity to ride a long in this true beast of a classic garbage truck! Here we have the legendary GarWood LP-900 rear load body on a gorgeous Kenworth Hustler cab and chassis! This old beauty is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6V-53 two-stroke engine with an early Allison automatic transmission. The audio here does this truck little justice, in person she absolutely screams!
For those unfamiliar with the history of the GarWood LP-900 body, the model was built from 1972 until 1979 by GarWood, after which the design was sold to Heil and became the Formula 5000 rear loader that many of us grew up with. It is still built today with an updated curved shell body, marketed as the Heil DuraPack 5000. The original tailgate/hopper/packer assembly remains virtually unchanged to this day.
Watch here as this classic machine navigates its way through a scenic country garbage route in rural Oregon, handling a variety of manual and semi-automated collection. I tried to capture this beauty from as many angles as possible, and I experimented with several shots that I've never attempted before! I put a lot of hard work into trying to give this old girl the justice she deserves, and I hope you all enjoy the end result!
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the kind gentlemen at Sunrise Sanitation Service for allowing me to tag along on route to document this rare gem! It is a huge honor and privilege to be able to share this truck with all of you!
